Solan og Ludvig (stop motion)

THE PROJECT

Solan & Ludvig is a film triology (3rd one in the making now) produced by Maipo and Qvisten Animation based on the characters of the Norwegian author and Illustrator Kjell Aukrust. All three screenplays are originally screenplays.

I worked as the Production designer on all three of them (finishing my work on the 3rd one this spring 2017).  My responsibilities has been to reseach Kjell Aukrust illustrations, norwegian architecture and interiors from 1850 to 1980 and create a design of a timeless norwegian countryside. I have painted conceptst, sculpted character concepts (zbrush), sketched out all the sets in 3d to plan scales, rough camera angles and worked close with the different departments to take care of the practical apsects of the sets. My 3d models was also usedas building guides.

I have also supervised and art directed the design teams and art directed the external suppliers like Pedri in Amsterdam, SeMaFor and WJ team in Poland and John Wright in England.

Finally I have designed the Logo, all the movie posters, a lot of newspapers and similar textures used in the movie and many of the mattepaints both flat and parallaxed.

MY WORK

Here are a selection of my artwork from the projects. Most of the concept paintings and work here are entierly made by me. But I also added some that have been worked on by several designers. This because sometimes one designer sketch and another one paints it, or we like the head but redesigns the body and so on. This way everything easily becomes a mix of people (I will list all the designers for those images). Sometimes as an Production designer I don't have time to work on a piece for longer than to the stage where I can briefe another designer to continue and finish it. But everything has been briefed and art directed by me. I also adde som pictures from the building process and still frames from the movie to show the final result.

CINEMATIC POSTER

Cinematic poster for the first movie in the triology.

PICTURES FROM THE STUDIO FLOOR

The wonderful thing about the physical world of a stop motion production is that you work in a studio with cameras, tools, lights, clay, paint and so on.
